Guest Headers ~ Java Knees

•   January 05 2012 // arts   •

With the turn of the year, we introduce a new regular to our website. Guest Headers will feature specially-commissioned banners by upcoming artists; one-by-one the contributors will head the site with refreshable strips.

First up is Java Knees aka Jake Evans, currently studying for the final year of his Illustration degree at the University of Brighton. His compulsive line-drawings echo preliminary drafts where mistakes and corrections are structurally integral to the composing process; calculated marks posing as sporadic scribbles.

What are the main influences on and themes of your work?

A lot of the time it’s hard for me to say, I’m guilty of spendings hours just looking at pages and pages of pictures, storing them on my archive blog and never really chasing it up further. I definitely have a tendency to gravitate towards the surreal and the exaggerated. Sometimes these images manifest themselves as forms in my drawings. I usually get fixated with specific marks or shapes, for example the inclusion of golf flags in some drawings every now and then has some relation to a very short period of time I spent working at a local golf course (I know nothing about golf) but that’s probably a lie. I sometimes go through short bouts of obsessions with things which can range from playground design and sports markings to small things like paper offcuts and boat paddles.
Your visual language lends itself to drawing very well, are there any other media you are experimenting with at the moment?

Like most I try to experiment as much as possible, my drawings are usually initial documents that I will look to translate into other things or ways of working. At the moment I seem to be working more with film, photography, sculpture and collage.  You can view some of my recent video work here. Although I study Illustration at Brighton a lot of my drawing work is personal and usually has no relation to any of the projects I get at university. I should also probably mention that I design the print work for Pigeon, a great website and publication project started by two CFAP students at Brighton, it’s aimed at students and investigates contemporary art issues highlighted by student education. You can buy Issue 1 here called ‘Studio’.

What are your aims for 2012?

To graduate, well, find another word for ‘work’. Start something revolutionary. And hopefully bump into success, fame and fortune on the way. Finally, not to eat chicken goujons just because my housemates thrive on them.
